History of the Watermill-Sawmill-E-Werk-Rathaus-Kulturhaus/Tourist Information

These few words alone outline more than 400 years of use of the mill building on the right bank of the Wienhäuser Mühlenkanal.

In 1591, Duke Wilhelm the Younger of Braunschweig and Lüneburg ordered the construction of a one-storey half-timbered building combining aesthetics and functionality in simple beauty.
Extensive restoration work in 1837 saved the building from decay. The use as a grain and groat mill could thus be maintained.

At the end of the 18th century, a new, multi-storey mill building was erected on the opposite bank of the canal. However, the investments in the "old" mill were sustainable. In 1908 a turbine was installed, which supplied the village with electricity until 1956. Grain has not been ground since 1962. At the beginning of 1968, the Wienhäuser inaugurated their town hall in the "old mill".

Today, the joint municipality of Flotwedel has a modern administrative centre on the outskirts of the town. The plans for a cultural centre and a tourist information centre in the rooms of the former town hall were a far-sighted decision. And once again this venerable building in the historic centre of Wienhausen has undergone a thorough beauty cure. This simple and at the same time aesthetic half-timbered building is well prepared for new tasks.
