The round trip starts at the residence and half-timbered town Celle. You can also arrive here by train if you prefer.

TIP 1:

Celle is a royal residence town with culture, grace, elegance and the dynamism of the present. Celle old town with its more than 450 timber-framed houses is the largest enclosed timber-framed ensemble in Europe. Welfen Castle at the heart of the city is one of the oldest buildings in the city together with the town church and the old town hall. You can explore the city on your own or take a city tour.

From Celle, the tour follows the Aller cycle path through Oldau, past the historic hydroelectric power plant to Suedwinsen. From there it continues to Wietze, where you can take a break to visit the German Oil Museum.

TIP 2:

You also cycle along the Hornbosteler Hutweide nature reserve near Wietze. This beautiful countryside directly on the Aller has its own special charm with sweeping views over meadows and pastures. With a bit of luck, you might encounter a herd of Heck cattle located on one of the pastures. Heck cattle are descendants of the meanwhile extinct aurochs. On another pasture you might also get to see wild Przewalski horses from Mongolia who also have their habitat here.

TIP 3:

Did you know that the first oil well in the world was drilled in Lueneburg Heath? The German Oil Museum Wietze provides proof in the form of conveying and drilling equipment from the period around 1900 displayed on an area of 20,000 m². An exhibition depicts oil as a raw material, its extraction and subsequent diverse uses in anything from an aspirin to a toothbrush.

The tour continues past Meissendorf Ponds to Winsen. Take a break at Meissendorf Ponds to observe the rare waterfowl from the observation platform or visit the nearby NABU manor Gut Sunder and its Wildlife Centre to discover unique aspects of nature. The Meissendorf Ponds once served the famous animal filmmaker Heinz Sielmann as a backdrop due to their large occurrence of rare waterfowl and numerous migratory bird species.

Winsen boasts a post windmill and the Winser Museumshof - an open-air museum with a typical farmyard yard and a farm café. The bike tour takes you from Winsen to Suedheide Nature Park. Typical old heath villages line the way. Discover Neolithic burial mounds, Bronze Age graves and a megalithic tomb on this tour. You can also experience rural life at the local "Römstedt Haus" museum in Bergen.

Wietzer Berg has more to offer than just the Loens monument. You can also enjoy the beautiful views from the centre of park-like heathland and discover burial mounds.
