Aller cycle path, stage 3

Only a few kilometres east of Winsen lies the small town of Oldau with the hydroelectric power plant that was built in 1910/1911.

    TIP 6:

Oldau boasts the only hydroelectric power plant in northern Germany, which has largely been preserved in its original condition. The power plant was built between 1910 and 1911.

From Oldau, the Premium Cycle Path along the Aller meadows takes you to one of the highlights of your bike tour: the royal timber-framed town of Celle, founded 700 years ago. With over 450 lovingly restored and listed timber-framed houses, Celle is the city with Europe's largest enclosed ensemble of timber-framed building. Celle’s "Speaking Lanterns" are a special experience. Five talented lanterns have teamed up in the old town to tell you exciting, fun and informative stories about Celle's city life. Unusual in appearance, the lanterns are equipped with speakers and tell you one or two f the many (hi)stories about the former royal town and its blue-blooded inhabitants. The city's oldest buildings include the town church, the old town hall and Welfen Castle.

    TIP 7:

Surrounded by more than 450 lovingly restored half-timbered houses, Welfen Castle and its royal museum is at the heart of the historic royal town of Celle. It illustrates the Baroque life of the oldest and still existing princely family of Europe, the Welfs.

The extensive medicinal plant garden of Celle offers nature lovers a fragrant experience. Information boards provide interesting facts about medicinal herbs and how Hildegard von Bingen and Pastor Kneipp used the medicinal plants.
